A. Z. Geerling / Intertidal Zone Exhibition at Amsterdam Climate Week (2022)

Anna Ziya Geerling (1993) is originally from Amsterdam, and currently based in Tromsø, Sápmi/Norway. She fulfills the role of co-coordinator of Ekologos and the development of a digital platform; currently using the Wiki. With a MA Phil in Indigenous Studies obtained at the Arctic University of Norway in Sápmi, she is currently on a Firebird Foundation grant to conduct fieldwork on oral literature in Nagaland. For this she will join forces and collaborate with the existing research project 'Earthkeepers' on local perceptions and mitigations of climate change. Together with experimental philosopher and artist Jonathon Keats, she runs the Intersubjective Ecology Lab as part of Ekologos, where artistic methods are used to address and experiment with questions of environmental philosophy and ethics. One of Keats' projects taken up by the Highland Institute is 'Tasting Tomorrow', while Anna Ziya has introduced improvisation theatre exercises (embodied storytellling) to interact with Keats' project on 'More-than-Humane Bestiaries', which explore the values or ethics we can learn from the more-than-human world. As part of the organising effort and contributor to the recent Highland Gathering (14-19 December, 2023 in Kohima), she has offered a workshop in the latter, and also hosted a dialogue on 'Decolonising our Relationship with ''Nature'' ' and a participatory story booth. She also works independently as a multimedia artist that engages with the socio-cultural ecological crises from a critical point of view, with her recent multimedia exhibition project 'The Intertidal Zone' especially engaging with water and Climate Change, and challenging the 'Western' epistemic divide between human and nature, and other forms of border thinking.
